Why your Reels are (or aren't) performing 👀

There’s nothing spookier than social media and Instagram’s algorithm, if you ask me! And this week is no different. The social media apps are even spookier with news, updates, and features this week, so let’s get into it.

Kinda. Instagram admitted last week that the quality of the videos on your Instagram Story and Reels all depends on how much engagement the video is getting.

Say wut.

Adam Mosseri explained that “if something isn’t watched for a long time … [Instagram] will move it to a lower quality video, and then if it’s watched again a lot, then we’ll re-render the higher quality video.”

While I can somewhat understand the need for this, this also means that content that isn’t being viewed as much loses quality and could mean losing more engagement!

Yup, another day, another country planning on banning social media. This time it’s Norway that is looking to set an age limit on social media of 15.

At the moment, the country already has a limit of 13 and it looks like it’s ready to increase that age soon.

The campaign around this says tech companies are “pitted against small children’s brains” and while social media can offer a sense of community for kids, Norway also thinks kids shouldn’t be influenced by an algorithm (I mean, fair enough!).

Norway is still figuring out how it will actually put this restriction in place, and if it goes through, I will be watching and waiting to see what happens next.

💅 We're Too Cute To Be Stressed: This trend centers on using humor and lightheartedness to deal with potentially stressful or overwhelming situations. Creators often start by acknowledging a challenging task or reality before using a playful tone and affirmations like "Relax, we got this," "We're good," and most importantly, "We're too cute to be stressed."

😬 I Lied: This trend is a POV (point of view) which starts with the phrase “I lied” and then you give someone a view point, lecture, or explain something in detail. This is great for brands, creators, or very specific niches!

🥲 Spoil It All: Use this audio to show off your brand’s personality! It’s a funny audio where you “spoil it all” by saying something that could be taken as annoying by another person.

There have been rumors abound for a while that adding your own logo to your Instagram Reel can affect your reach.

Well, those rumors are FALSE! At least, according to the one man who is Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri.

As the man himself said: “The answer is not hat’s actually good to go. What we try to do is not recommend Reels with logos from other apps, but if it’s your own logo, don’t worry about it.”

So there you go! No penalties for you if you have your own logo on your Reel.
