TikTok's ban is looming 👀

Well, it’s been a week for social media platforms—especially those in Australia. With the ban for under 16s officially passed, all eyes are on Australia and how exactly they are going to get teens to not access social media apps (with 22% of teens saying they already like about their age online already).

And with TikTok’s ban deadline approaching in the USA, it is going to be an interesting year ahead for apps.

With that in mind, let’s get into the social from the week:

We will soon enough know whether or not TikTok’s potential ban will be extended or put into effect.

On December 6, a US federal appeals court is going to rule whether or not to uphold the law stating TikTok needs to sell or be banned in 2025.

There are a few things that could happen with this ruling—and two of them could extend the life of TikTok:

• Court agrees TikTok needs to either sell or divest their US assets.
• Court upholds the law but says it's unfair to TikTok stating the Constitution’s “Bills of Attainder” AKA: laws that punish a specific person, entity, or class
• Court states it's unconstitutional and TikTok can stay.

We only have to wait a few more days to know the ruling (well, unless they push it out … again).

• Meta has written a formal proposal to bring age verification to European App Stores.
  
  

• Meta could soon have to sell off Instagram and WhatsApp.
  
  

• You can now add your own template to Facebook Stories for people to use.

• You’ll finally be able to choose your default feed on Threads. Seems like the threat of Bluesky is really getting to them…
  
  

• Bye-bye, LinkTree. Instagram is letting you create your own page full of direct links.
  
  

• Your DM button is being moved in Instagram.
  
  

• It’s time to start sharing! Instagram is allowing users to create mini-community groups of up to 50 people.
  
  

• Sharing Reels in your Stories just got a whole lot nicer.
  
  

• Bluesky seems to be more popular than Threads.
  
  

• YouTube Music is doing its own version of Spotify Wrapped.
  
  

• TikTok is doing a new filtering system on all DMs. 👀
  
  

• Swipe right! Threads now lets you swipe between feeds on your Home Screen.
  
  

• Instagram wants you to create Video Notes and send to friends.

In response to rising anxiety and mental health concerns, TikTok is now blocking beauty filters for users under 18. Fair enough.

With more and more countries imposing restrictions and fining platforms for not protecting kids, it seems like social media platforms are doing everything they can to not be banned or cough up a large sum of $$$$ from country to country.

Again, like with Australia and other countries, we will all be waiting and watching to see if these restrictions do anything or if kids will find new ways to get around the rules.
