Boy, oh boy. While there might not have been any BIG pieces of social media news this past week, there has been update after update and feature after feature.
The quick-fire news section is packed to the brim, so get ready for it! I certainly wasn't prepared for how long it was going to be when I started prepping for the newsletter this week. 😮💨
Phones on silent. Drinks in hand. Let’s get into this week’s social media news! |
Will the US own 50% of TikTok? 😳 |
If it wants to last in the US, TikTok might have to swallow its pride and give up 50% of its US stake … to the US government. Eeek! Before the 14-hour ban last month, a company called Perplexity AI created a proposal to buy TikTok for the US. TikTok said, “lol no way!” Now, the company has revised its proposal to ByteDance and is requesting for Perplexity and the US government to own the app in the US with the government owning “up to 50% of the new company upon a future IPO.” The most notable thing about this though? The proposal states that TikTok can keep the algorithm that knows us better than we know ourselves. Essentially, the best part of the app wouldn’t be available to US users.
Yikes. 😵💫 There are still quite a number of hoops the company has to jump through, like getting the go-ahead from ByteDance, it’s existing investors, and more. It seems we still have a ways to go when it comes to the future of TikTok in the US. |

Meta is desperate for you to be on Threads 🧵 |
After announcing that it has reached 320 million users, Threads is giving users more tips and tricks to grow on the platform. And the tips? Pretty basic, IMHO, but let’s get into them: -
Use search to find things you like. Yes, this is a real tip. Search for your favorite shows, topics, sports, and more to discover posts that pique your interest. Good tip.
-
Use Voice, GIFs, and Polls to connect more with users. You can create voice notes (which is quite cool) as a post that Threads will translate. You can also add GIFs and polls to your posts to engage users and make your posts more fun to interact with.
-
Edit, draft, and schedule your posts. You can now edit your posts if you’ve made a typo within 15 minutes of posting (This should be a thing you can do for free on X, ya hear that, Elon?!). You can also save multiple drafts, plus (this is NEW!), you can officially schedule your posts!
-
Customize your feed to have content you actually like and want to see. You can create custom feeds based on topics and people that you are interested in.
Again, these tips don't really feel like "tips," but what do I know? I'm just a social media girlie running a newsletter and have been chronically online since social media was invented. |
