NYC bans social media 😳

Not only that but social media platforms are about to be put to the test—at least in NYC. From social media bans to new features being dropped on YouTube to X doing another X thing, here's everything you need to know this week in social media news:

Yes, it’s true. For kids, at least. New York has officially passed legislation that will ban social media platforms from algorithmically recommending content to kiddos on their platform.

The Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids act (catchy name) will officially stop platforms like TikTok and Instagram from pushing content to anyone under the age of 18 based on the company’s algorithm.

And if any of the platforms don’t follow suit? Well, it’ll get a nice hefty fine of $5000 per user. Oof.

The new Act will:

• Ban addictive feeds for children and teens without parental consent
• Prohibit notifications for minors between midnight and 6am, unless approved by a parent
• Enables parents to limit access to social media with addictive feeds
• Stops retaliation against users who do not opt-in to addictive feeds or notifications

How this will work still remains to be seen but it’ll be fascinating to see how it plays out.

Well, well, well. X is officially hiding what users like on its platform. All those days of being able to creep on what your favorite celebrity was liking on X will soon be long gone.

RIP.

Previously, the ability to hide likes was for X Premium subscribers only but Elon Musk has since changed that policy to help “better protect your privacy.”

With the new changes, you will:

• Still be able to see posts you have likes (but others cannot).
• Metrics for your own posts will still show up under notifications
• No longer see who liked someone else’s post
• Be able to see who liked your own posts

It’s an interesting move from the platform and one that doesn’t seem well liked, if you’re going off the top comments under the post.
