TikTok is staying on top of Instagram just like Instagram is staying on top of TikTok—or trying to at least. TikTok’s latest feature is a direct copy and paste of Instagram Stories called, wait for it, TikTok Stories. With the new feature, you can start reaching new audiences, experimenting with new content, and fine-tuning your social media strategy on the app. Ready to get started? Here is everything you need to know about TikTok Stories.

What are TikTok Stories? 🤳
TikTok Stories are very similar to Instagram Stories where they will disappear after 24 hours.
The difference between TikTok Stories and other social media Stories is that TikTok Stories appear in the feed with a blue Story icon to make it clear that it’s not an actual TikTok video. Stories users are able to comment, like, and share Stories, unlike other platforms, as well.
TikTok Stories have a max 15 seconds and you can also do a series of Stories that you publish together that will appear in order, so you can see the short videos altogether.
How to post a TikTok Story? 🤷‍♀️
Now that you know what they are, how do you post one for yourself? Here’s your step-by-step lesson:
- Log in to your TikTok account
- Press the “+” at the bottom of the screen like you would when you’re making a new video.
- Swipe along the bottom until you see “Story”
- Choose your time limit on how you want the story to be. It can be between 1-15 seconds.
- Create your video! You can add effects, sounds, transitions, and more—just like you would with a regular TikTok video.
- After you’re done creating the Story, click “next.”
- On this page, you can tag people, captions, hashtags, locations, and more.
- Click “Post.”
How to delete a TikTok Story đźš«
Post a TikTok Story and realize that you don’t actually want it online? We get it. If 24 hours is a bit too long for your Story to stay online, you can delete it!
- Go to your profile and click on the Story.
- Click the three dots at the bottom of the sidebar.
- A new screen will appear and from here, you’ll swipe to the bottom until you see the “delete” option.
- Click “delete” and it will be removed from your profile.
Why you should use TikTok Stories 🤔
There are a number of reasons why you should use TikTok Stories and we’re going to take you through some of our favorite reasons why.
Test before posting to your feed
For a lot of social media managers, A/B testing your content is important! However, A/B testing can be expensive and not always worth the time, so instead of putting money into sponsored A/B tests, try it on your Stories first!
Post a Story one day and then another one on a different day at a similar time. After they post, TikTok will tell you the metrics on how well each of the stories did and which one had more reach.

Experiment with trends
Before making a permanent post, you can use TikTok Stories to experiment as much as you want without it living forever on your feed. Hop on a trend and see if it hits your audience in a certain way. Experiment with a new video idea. Try out new content that you would have never tried before on your feed. Stories can be a fun way for you to try something new to see what your audience might like in the future from you.
Stay ahead of the game
TikTok Stories are still pretty new, so being one of the first adopters of Stories on the platform is staying ahead of the game! Being able to try new things out and staying ahead of your competition can reward you in the end.
How long do TikTok Stories stay up? ⏱️
TikTok Stories stay online for up to 24 hours, just like an Instagram Story. Once they disappear, no one but you can see the videos.
Can you see who viewed your TikTok Stories? đź‘€
At the moment, no. TikTok doesn’t give you the option to see which individual accounts viewed your TikTok stories. But, if Instagram allows you to be able to see who viewed your Stories, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ll soon be able to do the same on TikTok.
