Meta has decided to be kind to its users and allow people a sneak peek into the ins and outs of the Threads algorithm. Now, if you’re not on Threads yet and are unsure if you want to be on there at all, we totally feel you! Another social media app? Who has the time?!
However, as Threads is becoming more and more popular, you could be missing out on reaching a whole new audience if you’re not on the app. Today, we’re taking you through everything we learned about the Threads algorithm according to Meta.

  1. How Threads’ algorithm works
    • Info gathering
    • Leverage signals
    • Rank content

How Threads’ algorithm works

Like any social media platform, Threads algorithm uses AI to determine what you would like in your feed. However, for the AI to actually know what you want—you need to help it along so it learns.

The AI predicts what you’re going to like or what you’re going to be into (like “How to Make the Best Sourdough Starter,” if you’re me). How do they predict what you’re going to be into? Well, it’s based on a few things like who you follow, like, or engage with the most.
Here’s an exact breakdown of exactly how the AI works to get you the right predictions:

Info gathering

AI will go through the content posted on Threads and cross-reference it to previous things you have liked and engaged with.

Leverage signals

The AI will take the info it has gathered and put “input signals” (aka data around the content it thinks you’ll engage with) based on past engagement.

Rank content

Finally, the AI will rank the content based on the above. It leverages the data it gathers and starts suggesting content to you based on what it thinks you’ll enjoy.
Yes, it’s exactly how other social media platforms work. So, if you want your feed and algorithm to work for you, you have to start engaging, liking, and following people you enjoy—and I promise, you’ll start seeing the content you want!

How to customize your Threads feed

According to Meta, your Threads feed is based entirely on your activity. So the power is in your hands, my friend.
How can you customize your feed? Here’s how:
  • Unfollow: Start unfollowing people you no longer want to see content from. Seriously, it’s really easy to click the “unfollow” button.
  • Report: See something that isn’t part of the Community Guidelines, is false information, or spam? Report it! This will help Threads, plus it will stop you from seeing more content like that.
  • Share: Like something? Share it in your DMs, onto your Story, or share it to another app.
  • Mute: Don’t want to see someone’s content anymore but also don’t want to unfollow them (I can name a few family members that I feel that way about 🙃), mute them!
  • Hide: Click the “hide” button for content that you don’t ever want to see on your feed—this helps the AI figure out what not to show you.
  • See content only from people you follow: If you’re not interested in any content other than those you follow, you can click the Threads logo and select “following.” When you click this, it won’t show you any recommended content.

What signals does Threads use to recommend content?

To get into the nitty gritty of what Threads uses to recommend content, we’re going to dig into each section:

Whether or not you like a post

Signals helping this prediction are:
  • How many posts you’ve seen in your feed
  • How many posts you’ve clicked to like
  • How many times you’ve clicked to like the author’s posts in your feed
  • How many posts you’ve clicked to like from the author, of those that you’ve seen

How likely you are to follow the author of a post

Signals helping this prediction are:
  • How many posts you’ve seen in your feed
  • How long it’s been since you were active on Threads
  • Which authors you’ve followed recently
  • Whether or not the post was predicted to contain language that goes against the Community Guidelines
  • How many times you’ve viewed the author’s profile on Instagram

How likely you are to scroll past a post rather than engage with it

Signals helping this prediction are:
  • The number of times that you’ve viewed a post
  • How many times you’ve clicked to like the author’s posts
  • How many times the post has been viewed by others

How likely you are to click to view replies on a post

Signals helping this prediction are:
  • How many times others have clicked to reply to the post
  • How many replies you’ve seen
  • How many times you’ve clicked to like the author’s posts in your feed
  • How long it’s been since you were active on Threads

How likely you are to click on the profile of a post’s author

Signals helping this prediction are:
  • How many times the author’s profile has been clicked
  • The profile click rate on the author of the post
  • Whether or not the post was predicted to contain language that goes against Community Guidelines
  • How many times you’ve viewed the author’s profile on Instagram

Frequently asked questions about Threads

How do you go viral on Threads?

Going viral on any platform takes a mix of strategy, timing, and a little bit of luck. While I can’t guarantee virality, here are some steps you can take to increase your chances on Threads:
Content:
  • Focus on engagement: Threads prioritize conversation-driven content. Create posts that spark discussions, ask open-ended questions, share unique insights, or use humor relevant to your audience. Avoid simple statements or self-promotion.
  • Storytelling is powerful: Share personal and relatable stories that evoke emotions and resonate with your followers. People connect with authenticity, so be your true self and share your passions.
  • Visuals matter: Use high-quality, relevant images or videos that grab attention and complement your text. Remember, the first image sets the tone, so choose wisely.
  • Keep it concise: People prefer easily digestible content. Break down your message into short, punchy tweets within the thread, ideally under 280 characters each.
  • Leave them wanting more: End your thread with a cliffhanger or call to action (CTA) to encourage further engagement, like asking a question or inviting responses.
Community:
  • Know your audience: Tailor your content to the interests and demographics of your target audience. Research popular topics and hashtags on Threads to understand what resonates.
  • Engage with others: Don’t just post, participate! Respond to comments, answer questions, and join conversations in your niche. Building a community is key.
  • Collaborate with influencers: Partnering with relevant influencers can expose your content to a wider audience. Look for people who align with your brand and offer value to your community.
  • Promote across platforms: Share your Threads content on other social media platforms like Instagram or Twitter to gain additional visibility.

Additional Tips:
  • Post consistently: Regular activity keeps you visible and in your audience’s minds. Develop a posting schedule and stick to it.
  • Experiment and analyze: Try different content formats, topics, and engagement strategies. Track your results and see what resonates best with your audience.
  • Be patient: Growing an audience and going viral takes time and effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Stay consistent, keep learning, and enjoy the process.
Remember, there’s no guaranteed formula for virality (sorrrrry!). Focus on creating valuable and engaging content, building a community, and staying authentic. Your unique voice and perspective might just be what catches people’s attention!
