Last week, Instagram announced that all video content uploaded on its platform will become Reels. Yes, whether you want it to become a Reel or not. And the feature announcement didn’t stop there—to encourage people to keep using Reels, Instagram has released new creative tools for users to start using on all their content.
But why make all video content Reels? Well, Meta explains:
“Since Reels offer a more immersive and entertaining way to watch and create videos on Instagram, we’re bringing the full-screen experience to your video posts, too. In the coming weeks, new video posts shorter than 15 minutes will be shared as Reels. Videos posted prior to this change will remain as videos and won’t become Reels.”
A whole 15 minutes! It seems like Instagram continues to try and compete with TikTok as TikTok’s longest video format is 10 minutes—but it’s working on creating longer format videos to compete with its biggest competitor, YouTube.
After announcing that all video content will now be Reels, Instagram has rolled out a couple new Reels editing options like:
- Remix for photos: Where you can now add your own spin and video content next to a static image to create your own unique Reel.
- Expanded Remix layouts: You can now have the option to choose between a green screen, horizontal or vertical split-screen, or picture-in-picture reaction view to add your own commentary to an existing Reel (like stitching in TikTok!).
- Add your clip: Again, similar to stitching on TikTok, you can add your opinion to a video clip after the original Reel.
Instagram also has expanded Reels template options, where you can easily create Reels by using an existing template a creator made for their own Reel. Just add your content and post. It’s super easy, and one of our favorite Instagram features!
A lot of people have voiced their frustration about the app constantly changing and trying to make itself more like TikTok when people just want … Instagram. And it does seem like more and more people are stepping away from the app because it doesn’t feel like the app they used to know and love and is just seeming like TikTok 2.0. What do you think? Do you agree or are you enjoying the Reels? Let us know over in our Facebook group by clicking the banner below!
