The biggest question that’s been circulating the internet recently has been: Does Instagram notify someone if you take a screenshot of their story, post, or direct message? If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you’ll have seen a few different contradicting videos and we’re here to dispel the rumors.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
Nope! Well, it doesn’t anymore. There was once a time a while ago when Instagram did let people know but times have changed! So if you’re looking to screenshot a photo of your friend’s ex and send them the tea, you can go right ahead without them knowing!
On the flip side, if you’re not wanting people to see your story and potentially screenshotting it, you can hide your story from them!
How to hide your Instagram story
It’s super easy to do. All you have to do is:
- Go to your settings
- Click Privacy
- Tap “Hide Story from”
- Add all the accounts you don’t want to see your story
You can also do it by swiping right on your Home Screen, as if you’re going to create a story.
- Click the settings icon
- Click “Story”
- Tap “Hide Story from”
- Add all the accounts you don’t want to see your story
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a post?
Again, Instagram doesn’t notify someone when you screenshot their post—we’d all probably get 100000 notifications if that was the case (hey, a girl can dream, right?).
If you’re screenshotting the post because you want to save it for later, there are in-app ways to do so, like Saves and Collections.
What is Instagram Saves?
Instagram Saves is when you press the bookmark icon on Instagram and it saves it into your collections folder on the app.
To manage your Saves, all you have to do is go to your Instagram profile, click on the hamburger menu and tap “Saves.” One of our favorite features with Saves is separating them into different Collections. Whatever you’re saving—outfits, travel inspo, home decor, etc—can be separated into different Collections for you to browse.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a direct message?
Yes and no. Yes, if you’re using Vanishing Mode. No, if you’re on regular direct messages.
What is Vanishing Mode on Instagram?
Vanishing Mode is a relatively new feature on an Instagram direct message where you can make your messages disappear after your recipient has read the message.
If you’re using Vanishing Mode and decide to screenshot or screen record the message, Instagram will notify the user.
How to access Vanishing Mode on Instagram?
If you want to use Vanishing Mode on Instagram, it’s super simple. All you have to do is:
- Go to your direct message
- Swipe up on the message to access Vanishing Mode
Overall, Instagram does not notify the user that you have screenshotted their posts, story, and direct messages. So fear not if you accidentally screenshotted a story—or if you did it on purpose! The user won’t know … unless Instagram decides to change the feature soon.
